New AI demonstrator Translation Check for the automatic checking of translated annual reports
KI.NRW’s digital AI.showroom presents a new AI tool to support controlling departments and translation agencies
Try out and understand artificial intelligence: Users can find out in which areas AI systems can be used and how the technologies behind them work in KI.NRW’s digital AI.showroom. The new AI tool Translation Check is now available for testing. It helps controlling departments and agencies to save a lot of time when checking translations of annual reports. The AI demonstrator was developed by KI.NRW and the Fraunhofer Institute for Intelligent Analysis and Information Systems IAIS.
Many companies are obliged to publish an annual report. If these companies are active in the export business, for example, or if their product range is internationally orientated, it is necessary to translate the report from German into English. When translating such reports, it is immensely important that they are accurate and legally correct, which is a very time-consuming task for employees.
This is what the Translation Check does
This is where the new AI tool Translation Check comes in with its intuitive usability. The annual reports are uploaded as a PDF document in German and English and the Translation Check gets to work: with the help of artificial intelligence, it automatically checks the translations for possible errors by comparing the German source text with the English one.
“With the help of image recognition-based PDF parsing and modern language models, the Translation Check checks and analyses German and English text passages for content matches and inconsistencies. In addition, an integrated feedback system ensures that users can evaluate the system’s suggestions. The AI model is further trained on this basis and the quality of the results is constantly improved. Furthermore, an integrated PDF viewer offers users the option of displaying inconsistent passages in a translation and exporting all check results. This simplifies the subsequent processing of the annual reports,” explains Maren Pielka, data scientist at Fraunhofer IAIS. She developed the Translation Check together with her team.
The KI.NRW showroom
“The Translation Check and the many other AI demonstrators are a central component of our work at the KI.NRW competence platform. We want to use very specific examples to show where AI can be used and, above all, where it can provide support. Users can experience the AI tools in action in our digital showroom,” says Dr Christian Temath, Managing Director of KI.NRW.
The AI demonstrator Translation Check is now available online and can be tried out at translation-check.ki.nrw.
