Artificial intelligence and sustainability: Impulse paper on Energy Sector available for download

26.04.2022

The first KI.NRW impulse paper in the “AI and Sustainability” series shows how AI systems can be used in the energy industry to help achieve climate protection goals.

Man-made climate change is one of the biggest challenges worldwide. As announced in our blog post of February 7, 2022, this year we will address the question of how AI systems can be used in the energy industry to help achieve climate protection goals. The first KI.NRW impulse paper in the “AI and Sustainability” series shows how AI systems can contribute to more sustainable development and thus to more climate protection. The focus will be on so-called impulse papers, in which we will take a closer look at the possibilities of AI in the context of sustainability with the help of experts from NRW. The aim is to raise awareness of the fact that AI can also be a real game changer in terms of climate protection.

The first impulse paper in this series has now been published and is dedicated to the topic of the energy sector. In a compact format, we show where AI solutions from North Rhine-Westphalia are already being used in the energy sector today. Use cases show, among other things, how intelligent process control of combined heat and power plants helps to increase the efficiency of the power plant and at the same time reduce emission levels and the consumables used, or how AI-based forecasting of solar power helps to avoid power fluctuations in the grid and thus high costs for control energy.

In short interviews, we also spoke with Ulf C. Reichardt, CEO of NRW.Energy4Climate, and Philipp Richard, Head of Digital Technologies & Start-up Ecosystem at dena, and asked them what role AI plays in their work.

The impulse paper is now available in german language for free download.
